All shade is not the same - Be aware of this when buying a parasol
On hot summer days parasols, awnings and beach chairs help to keep us nice and cool and protect us from harmful UV radiation. However, major variations in quality for sun protection were revealed in tests carried out on various parasols by experts from the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim on behalf of SWR's consumer affairs programme "Infomarkt" in 2000.

Where real life meets research - 4th Hohenstein Institute Innovation Exchange
On Thursday 10 June 2010, Prof. Dr. Stefan Mecheels welcomed nearly 80 people with an interest in the textile industry and research to the 4th Innovation Exchange at the Hohenstein Institute. On the previous evening, the Hohenstein "Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence in Global Textile Services" had been presented to Christine Krautschneider, long-standing managing partner and now Chair of the Supervisory Board of Salesianer Miettex in Vienna. Under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Dirk Höfer of the Institute for Hygiene and Biotechnology at the Hohenstein Institute, participants in the Innovation Exchange were introduced to 12 research projects in very different fields which have been carried out in partnership with the industry. Between the presentations there was ample time for the audience and the presenters to talk, so any specific questions could be answered in a face-to-face meeting.

A new approach optimises "lotus effect" of soil-repellent textiles - Improved surface structure increases hydrophobicity and durability
Soil-repellent textiles that optimally utilise what is known as the "lotus effect" seen in nature have been developed under the auspices of a joint research project of the BMWi [Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology] carried out by the Hohenstein Institute in Boennigheim and ITCF Denkendorf (AiF-No. 15142 N/1). By means of new fibre structuring, the soil-repellent effect has for the first time been realised through fibre immanent surface structuring. Particles that have been incorporated during manufacturing have shown only negligible effects on the behaviour of dyes and the dye absorbency of the polymer.

Regulating the concentration of disinfecting agent during rinsing -The laundry industry is benefiting from new findings on need-based disinfecting
A joint research project by the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim and the ITCF Denkendorf (IGF No. 15482 N), financed by the AiF with funding from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, is for the first time delivering data about how best to regulate the concentration of disinfecting agent in rinsing water. Implementing the results of the research will mean that the dosage can match the need and the service life of textiles being processed can be increased, resulting in both economic and ecological improvements in the laundry sector. The washing machine and detergent industries now have the opportunity to go on to develop innovative systems for analysis and regulation. It will also be possible for companies to set up their own online system for measuring active oxygen for relatively little expense. A system of data recording enables the levels of hygiene that have been achieved during the rinsing process to be documented.

Improved properties for functional knitted fabrics - Innovative warp-knitted construction for leasing textiles
A research project conducted at the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim, (PRO INNO KF0125504UL7), in partnership with the company Eschler Textil, has resulted in an innovation in the field of warp-knitted working clothes. For the first time, warp-knitted fabrics have been developed for making clothes for healthcare workers and doctors which retain their functional properties - especially their smart appearance and high degree of comfort - even after industrial washing. This means that highly functional knitted garments can also be used in the textile leasing business.

Athlete’s foot fungus in the laundry basket?
In Germany, there are approximately ten million people who suffer from athlete’s foot. To be protected from infection, it is recommended that shoes are worn in particularly risky areas such as swimming pools, saunas or hotel rooms. However, little attention has been paid to the risk of infection that exists in people's homes. What happens if the socks of one family member who suffers from athlete’s foot are kept together with other laundry in the laundry basket and washing machine?

Optimized fit for plus-size women Size survey and research project gather current data for well-fitting clothing
Full-figured women will soon have available to them new shopping opportunities – thanks to one of the research projects (AiF-Nr. 15144 BG) overseen by the Forschungskuratorium Textil e.V. (Textile Research Board). Under the auspices of the project, the body measurements of the full-figured are being comprehensively measured and evaluated scientifically for the first time. As a result of this effort, the garment industry will have current body measurement data, guidelines for optimised designs, and realistic busts in the form of virtual size models. These make possible optimised tailoring to meet properly the needs of plus size women.

New protective treatment for light-coloured furnishing fabrics
Furniture with light-coloured upholstery is very fashionable just now, but it gives rise to numerous complaints to retailers and manufacturers on account of discoloration caused by other textiles. Traditional stain-repellent treatments, usually based on fluorocarbon resins, are not the answer here: while they may offer effective protection from standard water- or oil-based stains such as food and drink, they cannot prevent colour transfer caused by (excess) dye in clothing or other domestic textiles.

Optimistic mood in the Russian textile industry The Hohenstein Institute is seeing tremendous interest in quality testing
In 2009, the Hohenstein Institute Textile Research Centre has issued more than 30 Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certificates to Russian companies, and the trend is upwards. Many textile companies in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Moldavia and the Ukraine are also beginning to realise the importance of independent quality testing and are having their textile products assessed by the Hohenstein experts. Companies cover the whole spectrum from yarn producers to clothing manufacturers – in some cases still all under one roof in these countries.
