Textile Personal Protective Equipment
The European Directive 89/686/EEC provides clear specifications for the production and marketing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). According to the Directive, articles of clothing which protect the wearer from life-threatening hazards or protect health must be provided with the CE mark of conformity and comply with the basic requirements for health protection and safety specified in the Directive.
Identification is the responsibility of the “marketer”, the manufacturer, his representative in the EU or the importer into the EU. PPE must not be marketed in the European Economic Area unless it complies with the requirements of the Directive.
As Notified Body EU No. 0555, the Hohenstein Institute conducts EC type examinations according to the Directive for Personal Protective Equipment (89/686/EEC). These EC type examinations are essential before the person responsible for marketing can market PPE in the Single European Market and affix the CE mark of conformity.
All types of textile Personal Protective Equipment are certified (PPE):
- Firefighters’ garments (EN 469, EN 13911, EN 11612, EN 15614, EN 1486, HuPF)
- Insulated garments (EN 342)
- Weather-proof garments (EN 343, EN 342, EN 14058)
- Welders’ protective garments (EN 11611)
- Reflective garments (EN 471, EN 1150)
- Rain protection garments (EN 343)
- Heat and flame protection (EN 11612, EN 14116, EN 469, EN 11612, EN 15614, EN 1486)
- Flame protection (EN 11612, EN 14116, EN 469, EN 11612, EN 15614, EN 1486)
- Chemical protective clothing with restricted protection against liquid chemicals Type 6 and Type PB
In addition to the EC type examinations conducted by the PPE certification centre, the Hohenstein Institute also offers to test primary products for protective clothing which can be used to optimise clothing or develop products.
According to our principle “Everything from a single source” you can of course combine the services of our PSA certification centre with tests to check performance and general quality assurance as offered by the other service departments of the Hohenstein Institute.
